Devin O’Reilly was around when the fax machine was considered revolutionary in healthcare.
“It’s amazing at how many business transactions are still occurring with physicians and fax machines,” said O’Reilly, who is managing director at Bain Capital Private Equity. “It’s amazing that it’s still there.”
Before landing at Bain, O’Reilly was a onetime consultant and entrepreneur in healthcare technology. He joined Bain in 2005 and has been there for some of its biggest investments, including acquiring Boston-based software company athenahealth with Hellman & Friedman in February and acquiring healthcare AI company LeanTaaS in June.
O’Reilly spoke about what he looks for in potential digital health investments, why his firm decided to invest in and acquire athenahealth, and more. The interview has been edited for length and clarity.
