Cityblock Health, an Alphabet spinout that provides services to low-income populations through in-person outreach and virtual care, has hired Dr. Kameron Matthews as its chief health officer, according to a news release Monday.
The former chief medical officer for the Veterans Health Administration tried to help the Veterans Affairs Department right the ship of its troubled electronic health records system overhaul, serving as the health system's advocate on EHR modernization since September 2020. She previously served as assistant undersecretary for health for community care, working closely with community-based providers and related quality and patient safety initiatives.
"Transforming our healthcare system has been my passion, my life's work and to continue this at Cityblock is an honor," Matthews said in a news release. "The pandemic has further highlighted the deep disparities that exist within our healthcare system, and I'm looking forward to supporting Cityblock to scale their approach to community care, a model built specifically to meet the complex needs of this population."
Cityblock, which spun out from Sidewalk Labs in 2017, describes itself as a "value-based provider." It contracts with health insurers to provide services to low-income and other underserved members that improve health and lower the cost of care, including better coordinated medical care, access to behavioral healthcare and addressing social determinants.
The organization has raised roughly $892 million in venture-capital funding since 2017, according to data from Digital Health Business & Technology. In September, the startup raised $400 million in a Series D funding round. That's on top of the $192 million it brought in earlier last year.
